"Your suitcase looks a bit ropey."

That was said to me by dear Dr Hassell-Smith, Asst, Housemaster in Halls at the time, when he came to the large dorm to inspect our preparations for going home at the end of a term. Hassell was a great bloke I respected a lot. However, I was at the time a bit miffed at his remark since one of the few things I felt I could take pride in was the packing of my trunk, whose safety I enhanced with numerous straps and bits of rope. Perhaps the aesthetics surprised him! But later of course I realized he might just have been making a joke ...... But it's funny how I have remembered that.

I can't remember what I said in reply - probably nothing: in such situations looking sheepish and keeping schtumm was usually the best bet! I SHOULD have said:
"Oh please, Sir - stop
hasselling me!"
but I was too slow by far!
