Derek Thornbery circa 1962 |
I was sitting in the orchestra in the hall playing the clarinet next to Doc Thornbery on the flute. We had paused rehearsing (I cannot remember what - could have been "Mother Courage") while Barry Salmon talked with another member of the orchestra about something. It seemed to be a somewhat tricky problem and the delay went on for some time. Suddenly Doc turned to me and said: "They also serve who sit and wait." I didn't realize till much later that he was modifying a famous quote from John Milton's "When I Consider How My Light is Spent". He changed the "stand" in the original poem to "sit", which was rather clever and something I have never forgotten! (Chris Snuggs) |
