"I attach a photo of me copied from today's BBC Africa Internet news service. I'm the one on the right, reading a statement to the press after 5 1/2 hours of negotiation with the big man next to me at a place called Goma, in the Kivu mountains of the Democratic Republic of Congo (old Zaire). The big man is called Onusumba, and he's the leader of a Congolese rebel group in the east of the country, supported by Rwanda. I went there on 18 April [2001] to persuade him to play ball and allow a UN military contingent to deploy to the area. Onusumba talked a lot, finally agreed, and the contingent deployed yesterday. I have been here, based in Kinshasa as British Ambassador, for the past year. "
