| Chris Snuggs: Probably thanks to Fred Mudd (but more info needed), Orwell House also had a darkroom available for boys' use. I forget how and when one could get in there, but I do remember using it on several occasions to make copies of particular photos I had acquired! How we got the chemicals, who paid for them etc is a blank, as is what happened to all those photos! But Orwell House certainly did a lot to give its boys different opportunities. |
| Graham Forster: Bob Skailes was one of the Orwell House Assisstant house masters, as was a Hungarian chap who was at the school for a time called Ilysh. We used to co-opt a few staff and wives to help with the concerts. Doc Thornbery was a flautist, Taffy Evans' wife had a very good soprano voice, and Bob Skailes' wife was a very good violinist. Two of the recreational features of Orwell were a Scalextrix cartrack and an electric train set. We also had a house tent in which 2 intrepid adventurers could spend the night on the green in front of the house. |

Neale: Anyway,
Orwell's darkroom. Yes, Mr Mudd was a photography enthusiast, so it was
probably his idea to install the darkroom. Use of the room was not limited
to Orwell boys, however, and I used it occasionally when I was in Corners
(I still have one or two prints that I made there!). There were two enlargers
-- a large black one and a smaller, more modern, white one. These were on
the bench to the right as you entered the small room. The bench to the left
carried the developing and fixing trays and, I believe the sink was built
into it, too.
As
Mr Mudd was a Chemistry master as well as a photography enthusiast, I
suspect he had little trouble obtaining the required chemicals! |
