Ranjit Nagra: Corners?       John Anthony Lewindon: Looks like it!

Mike O'Driscoll: Yup: the 1970-1971 Intake. I think post 'O' levels (GCSE). The roof of Corners (last photo) was an occasional sunbathing spot accessed by climbing out of a window and clambering up to a flattish leaded area.

Jon Kemp: Looks like Malcolm Pickles in the last photo with Nutless ....

Mike O'Driscoll: It's Malcolm Bannister Jon. Malcolm Pickles was a couple of years above and had already left.

Jon Kemp: I was looking on my phone; now I'm on my laptop I see you are correct.

Paul Taylor: What great pictures Mike. Recognised Nutless straight away.

Chris Archer: Back in ‘70 we got out onto the roof through the 1st floor window in the bathroom and tied a rope to the bell. Spread rumours about the “ghost” and rang it after Sunday service when the juniors were halfway across the field. Caused pandemonium at the time! Also, a certain HR Ramsey wasn’t too pleased with us??

Peter Alexander: And if I remember rightly, this caper was the precursor of me getting kicked out of Corners and being in the first intake at the Courtyard with DRWT. Ramsay had rushed into the sixth form bathroom, caught me in the act and I believe accidentally punched me in the kidneys. My spontaneous reaction was to pick him up and hang him from the coat hook behind the door. Not proud of it and it did mean I was suspended and on return joined Derek in the courtyard, which was a much more pleasurable experience as we were treated like adults. I believe Dennis also came to the courtyard as he had been made Head of School, so all in all, a good result. HRH didn't hold grudges, and many years later we laughed about the altercation though at the time I had some explaining to do to parents who did not condone such acts. In fact in the days before my suspension, I had to sleep in the sick-bay before my father arrived having been summoned by Bailey to collect me. Thoroughly ashamed.

Chris Archer: Totally correct there, Peter. The reason you were accidentally punched was down to HRR telling you to get whoever was outside in (there was no-one as we had tied the rope to a broom that hung just outside the window) and so you “told” whoever was outside to come in. I also remember you asking me to return the empty beer bottles under the floorboards in your room to a certain pub.

Jon Kemp: I used to get on the roof by climbing out of a small window on the top floor that overlooked the Annex. It was out onto the sloping roof and up to the top. I was on the roof one day with Philip Hill and Rabjohn seeing the window open, closed it. We finally managed to find a way down round by the bell tower.

Chris Archer: Was that through what was the radio room back in the late 60’s / early 70’s? I seem to remember a way out onto the roof thereabouts?

Jon Kemp: It was a small room next to that room: shown above by the arrow. This is how we got up on the roof ......

Roger Evans: Not even sure this room was accessible in my day. Memory fails me .. was this the top floor ... to the right before on went into the hobby room?

Roger Evans: Yep. if the photo with Rai had been blurred, I would have recognized the pullover ??

Roger Evans: I reckon Rai would not recognize the others ... will see when I show him this.

Miles Davis: Nutless!!
