Berners House

Bernerites were different in being housed in the magnificent original main house: lots of atmosphere, easy access to most classrooms, a roomy common room, Orwell Side just outside the dorm, view of the Orwell etc. On the other hand, washrooms and toilets were across a courtyard and we were rather too near the Head's Office!

In the early years, Berners & Orwell Houses were Junior Schools, from where pupils went to one of the Senior Schools: Corners, Halls, Hansons or Johnsons. I never knew the criteria devised for deciding on which Senior House one went to.

Around 1960, this system was changed and both Junior Houses became Senior Houses. Again, the reason for this change escapes me. Maybe somebody else knows.

Berners House was distinctive in my time (1958 to 1963) for having "Shakey" as Housemaster, a thoroughly decent chap, of whom more elsewhere.
